  • Literature: Patrick Baty ( expert on Polhill Bevan and grandson of the painter) has described the work as follows:
"The present picture dates from a period when nearly all Bevan's landscape paintings depicted scenes in Poland.... Architecturally howvere the farme buildings appear to be English and so would suggest a Sussex subject... the part of England that drew Bevan from around 1905......His paintings from the period are often smaller in scale but strong in colour and notable for their loose brush strokes. Such works assimilate the influence of the artusts friends he met whilst studying at the Academie Julian in Paris - Vuillard, Bonnard and particularly Paul Seruiser....."

Robert Polhill Bevan Biography

View full artist profile

Robert Polhill Bevan studied at Westminster School of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1894 he met Gauguin in Pont-Aven. From 1922 until his death he was a member of the New English Art Club.

Robert Polhill Bevan was an animal painter who specialised in depicting horses, whether on the farm or at the races. He was also a landscape painter who certainly spent time in Poland, where he painted numerous views. Gerald Schurr mentions him in particular for his drawings, whose overall harmony and three-dimensional power are comparable to the work of Seurat.
